The DeLand YMCA Roller Hockey League was started in the fall of 1994. The first season was played at the Y on a bare concrete floor that had rather large cracks where 2 slabs came together. It was not unusual to see a hockey stick get stuck in between the slabs and break right off. We didn't have any dasher boards back then. We would take the benches from the basketball courts and turn them on their sides to try to keep the ball(what we used back then) contained in the playing area.
We experimented with plywood boards for a few years until they got to the point that we could no longer hold them together. At that point we were able to purchase the Roller Drome dasher boards that we use today.
We run 2 seasons per year in the Spring and in the Fall. Our seasons consist of 10-12 games plus weekly practices. We always end the season with an All Star Style Skills Competion and League Barbeque.
As much as we love the Game of Hockey, our real passion is young people. Hockey is a great "vehicle" for building character and integrity into the hearts and minds of young people through stressing the team concept and playing unselfish Hockey.
